If your SDL Trados Studio 2017 will launch in Trial mode (it will happen if you install the software for the first time on a computer) it will pick-up the licensing from Studio 2019 only after the Trial period expires. This will happen automatically and no further steps are required. Repairing your installation of SDL Trados Studio

You receive an error message, or experience unexpected behaviour that seems to be specific to your SDL Trados Studio installation (for example, it behaves differently to the way it does on your colleagues' computers).

Workaround 1: Run a repair installation

  1. Close all SDL applications.
  2. Open the Control Panel:
    • Windows Vista/7: Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Windows 8: Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
    • Windows 10: Right-click on Start > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features.
  3. Click/highlight the relevant SDL product from the list of installed programs, e.g. SDL Trados Studio 2017 SR1, and click Repair. For Trados Studio 2019 / 2021, the button is Uninstall/Change > Repair.
  4. Restart Trados Studio.

Workaround 2: Reset SDL Trados Studio basic settings

If the above approach does not solve the problem, you can reset non project-related settings:

  1. Close all SDL applications.
  2. Go to the following folder:
    • SDL Trados Studio 2021:
      • Windows 7/8/10: C:Users%USERNAME%AppDataRoamingSDLSDL Trados StudioStudio16
    • SDL Trados Studio 2019:
      • Windows 7/8/10: C:Users%USERNAME%AppDataRoamingSDLSDL Trados Studio15.0.0.0
    • SDL Trados Studio 2017:
      • Windows 7/8/10: C:Users%USERNAME%AppDataRoamingSDLSDL Trados Studio14.0.0.0
    • SDL Trados Studio 2015:

    • SDL Trados Studio 2014:
      • Windows XP: C:Documents and Settings%USERNAME%Application DataSDLSDL Trados Studio11.0.0.0

    • SDL Trados Studio 2011:

    NOTE: If you do not find this folder, make sure that these files are not hidden. See KB article Showing hidden files, folders and extensions on Windows operating systems
  3. Rename the following XML files (for example, add an underscore before/after the file name):
    • BaseSettings.xml
    • Plugincache.xml
    • UserSettings.xml
  4. Restart Trados Studio.

Many different causes can lead to Trados Studio having to be repaired or reset, including corrupt settings or issues with the Windows operating system installed on your PC.

I just discovered a weird bug in Trados Studio 2017, and it may cost me 1-2 working days!

I started using Trados Studio 2017 (and got it in trial mode mid November 2016. On December 14, when some 2-3 days remained of the trial period I decided to activate my copy. Everything worked fine. Since my license was for the “Starter” edition, I had to choose 5 languages I want to work with, but that’s OK.

Today I needed to work, so I started the program. And it tells me: License expired!
My online account at SDL, though, still shows that I got one license, which was activated on Dec 14. Therefore I’m not allowed to reactivate with the same code, on the same computer, since that license is “already in use” according to SDL.
